“An Eye for an Eye”

Written By: Mika Lai

The plus sign she did not anticipate.

She could not afford the cost of another one,

a permanent human to shape-

to help survive

She throws up.

Understanding what was about to come next

Gathering the frail green dollars, she drives away and pulls over at the nearest clinic

A tiny pea-like organism emptied out on a silver tray

Tears that signified her grief

Oh how she wished she were able to

Even more family-less than before

Alone.

Walking out,

Condemned by the people who understood nothing about her story

No. she now embodies the face of a “murderer”

Her next stop being the minimum wage 12 hour shift

And the next

And the next

Three days later she wakes up

to flashing blue-red

They barged in.

In front of her children

Metal bonds chained to her wrists,

also silver.

Now she sits on the wooden chair

Empty

Scared

Betrayed

A failed attempt to survive

That only led her to the opposite end.
